A good friend of mine recently attended a Hypnotherapy Training course. After the course, he came to me for some advice!

He isn't a native English speaker. During one of the hypnotherapy training sessions with a couple of fellow students, he mispronounced a word and the two native English speakers burst into laughter.

My friend said the laughter episode acted like a mental block - he wasn't sure whether he should carry on with the training?

My first question - did he speak to the course instructor for advice? "No."

That was a mistake. The course instructor is the best person to resolve any issues arising from the course. All I could suggest was how I advise writers to deal with mental blocks (writer's block) and he could explore what that does for him (just by replacing his subject where I say writing).

First of all, accept that each and every one of us go through mental blocks at one stage or another.

Once we accept that, we stop the mental block from getting out of all proportions. We know that it is a temporary block and it will be out of the way soon.

We can take some active steps to remove writer's (or mental) blocks.

  • Don't force yourself to write or to think about writing right now

  • Take a break - go away for a few days

  • Walk by the sea or a lake

  • Take a walk in the woods or a nature trail

  • Do something totally unrelated to writing

  • Go to a place where you can watch the world go by

  • Go for a long drive

  • Take a part in sports (golf, swimming, walking, aerobics, dancing, anything!)

  • Learn meditation

  • Enjoy time with your family and friends

  • Enjoy shopping

  • Do some gardening

After some of the above activities, you'll feel refreshed. It is then time to think of where you want to go and what you want to achieve. You'll be back on the right track very quickly.

I asked my friend what he wants to achieve?

"To help people," he replied without any hesitation.

I advised, "In that case, you know you can help 100s of persons every year. Are you going to let a couple of child minded individuals come in the way? Be creative - think about the positive things you want to do; not about tiny temporary blocks. Also, think about your strengths - you speak 5 or 6 languages. The poor souls who laughed at your pronunciation probably speak only ONE language. You can do hypnotherapy in 5 or 6 languages, they can only offer it in ONE. The problem is theirs, not yours. Focus on your achievements, not their childish ways!"

My friend smiled happily, "You should be a Hypnotherapist!"
