Reviewing books is an art and a science. It requires great skill and expertise. Professional reviewers need to know their subjects inside out. Such reviewers take great care in reading the entire book rather than just glancing through a few pages.

On the other hand, some (amateur) reviewers review thousands of books, dvds, audio tapes. Some do it just to boost their ego - they go to their local library and borrow books etc. and then plaster their highly opinionated rubbish on "freebie" sites. Some petty reviewers even have the arrogance to believe they are better than writers and publishers - they want to "slap" writers and publishers. To be a professional reviewer, you need to be highly professional - not an arrogant and egoistic ill-mannered brat who believes he has the right to slap anyone.

Professional reviewers take the time to read or view or listen to the materials. They are educated and qualified - and they limit their reviews to their field of expertise (unlike the one who reviews thousands of borrowed materials from the local library just to satisfy his ego).

Professional reviewing is very satisfying - and your peers acknowledge your work in the writing and publishing industry. Apart from the above ideas, you can easily tell the difference between a professional reviewer and an amateur - one writes a professional review; the other brags about his amateur egoistic opinions.

If you want to start a career in writing, becoming a freelance reviewer or a staff reviewer is a good stepping stone to bigger things.
