Short Story Competitions, Poetry Competitions - Open world-wide

There are many good poetry contests, short story competitions and writing contests around the world. It is easier to enter such contests and competitions via the Internet than was possible previously.

At the same time you must be aware that many "sharks" take advantage of aspiring poets and writers. They charge competition entry fees and never give out prizes. Others collect your poems and short stories and publish them for their own profit. Some "publishers" tell you how excellent your poems or short stories are - and they want to charge you a hefty fee to publish your work.

Don't fall for such gimmicks. Find genuine poetry contests and short story competitions - find out what prizes have already been given to the prize winners. Are the prize winners named for all to see?

If you have to pay more than a few $$££, be very cautious. There are some well known scams out there on the Internet.

However, there are of course many good and reputable publishers who are always looking to publish talented poets and writers. You just have to keep plugging away until your are discovered. Try sending a preliminary proposal to a literary agent. If your work excites the literary agent, you are lucky. They handle the presentation and all the dealings on your behalf.
