This depends on the writer as well as the editor. For example if you are an established writer - and you are highly creative and your writing makes compulsive reading, you may get away with being lazy when it comes to thorough spell checking. Bad spelling conveys "the I don't care" message to the editor. If you are a new writer, such mistakes may mean your work goes straight in the bin instead of being read, and considered seriously. Editors will of course go through the processes, including using proof readers, etc. However, polish up your writing to a high professional standard before it gets to the editor - and you will stand a much better chance of being accepted. All modern word processing packages contain spell checkers, etc. There is therefore little excuse to be lazy!
