It depends! You don't mention where you found out about the contest. There are many online Poetry and Writing Contests that are just "scams". Unless you read the small print, you don't know if there are any catches. For instance, do you have to pay entry fees? If you win, do you get the $10,000 immediately? Is the prize money shared between 100 winners? Some "vanity" publishers run such contests to "trap" writers and poets. Almost all entrants receive a letter congratulating them on "winning". The winner then has the "opportunity" to purchase a book containing winning entries. The book price is inflated - and often doesn't have high literary merit. In other words, the contestants have been taken for a ride. There are genuine contests. They may charge a small entry fee. They may open up opportunities. But you have to make sure that you find out as much as you can before parting with contest entry fees.
