Can you give me any advice on markets for short stories and short story competitions?

There are literally thousands of markets for short stories, and there are as many competitions.

The starting point is with you - what are you interested in.  You can then look at relevant magazines and newspapers or writers' magazines.

However, that can be a time consuming way - you may end up spending a lot of cash to evaluate magazines and also several months doing the research.

If you simply send your short stories at random, you are likely to be wasting your time as well as that of the Editors.

Most aspiring writers are reluctant to spend even a tiny sum of cash to do what the professionals do.  Professional writers have researched the market - and they are experts in their field.  If you are a serious aspiring writer, do what the professionals do - get a good writers' handbook and that will save you real time and money.  It will also help you to get published.  You may also consider attending writing classes in your area or even taking distance writing courses.
